Work with Us

The United States Institute of Leadership and Diplomacy seeks candidates who are intellectual leaders in their fields of expertise to contribute to the research and activities of the Institute. By choosing to contribute, you became part of a community that defines the debate on important questions, generate data and analysis, and provide policy-relevant solutions for governments, business and the academic community. USILD is international in character, composition and perspective. As employees we strive for the highest professional standards in both our work and conduct, engaging with others with respect, precision, courtesy and good humour. We have a truly international workforce of diverse nationalities. We value the diverse makeup of our organization and the rich perspectives this brings to our work.

We endeavor to be lean and disciplined, keeping bureaucracy to a minimum so that we can work to productive effect and get things done. We are ambitious for the future and part of this is a major refurbishment of our offices to modernize our working environment and processes – this is an exciting time to be working at USILD.

Employee development

We take employee development seriously at USILD, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to continually improve and increase their skills. We do this through training and by providing on-the-job opportunities to expand each individual's range of experience. We believe people should never stop learning.

To do this, we have a professional competency framework designed to ensure fairness, transparency and to be inspiring. Within the framework, each employee's role is defined and a job profile prepared identifying the standards required in the areas of: (a) knowledge and technical abilities; (b) business skills; and (c) behavioral factors. This allows for structured development to take place in preparation for promotion opportunities as they arise.

This framework is delivered through our performance management system, which provides for annual reviews and mid-year objectives discussion and adjustment.

A clear line manager support structure ensures staff are tasked appropriately and given clear direction on a daily basis. A bespoke management training program is open to all and supports the competency framework. This allows for staff to develop their business and soft skills, alongside their chosen technical field.

From time to time second opportunities to our international offices arise. We see this as a valuable experience enabling USILD to retain the expertise and to develop the individual internationally.

Employee benefits

The Institute offers a range of benefits including group life assurance, contributory pension scheme with access to salary exchange, private medical insurance, health cash-back plan for everyday health expenses, access to a season ticket loan facility and a cycle-to-work scheme. A generous annual leave allowance is awarded of up to 34 days per year  and an additional Christmas shutdown of up to five days. USILD offers competitive salaries above usual charity.

The Institute seeks to be a family-friendly employer, offering generous maternity, paternity and adoption benefits. Statutory time off for dependents, supplemented by discretionary compassionate leave, is supported where merited.

We hold a summer party and a Christmas party each year, to which staff are warmly encouraged to bring their partners.

Employee wellbeing

We understand that to have healthy employees we need to make it as easy as possible for staff to look after themselves. To provide support on a practical and mental health level, the Institute provides an employee assistance program with access to professionals who can help in the areas of family matters, bereavement, relationships, work, stress and financial guidance.

Diversity

We aspire to create a culture that is inclusive and diverse. We work hard to attract and retain outstanding and internationally focused people throughout our worldwide network of offices.
